Shadows of Little Rock

On Friday, October 13, 1995, my good friend, Flo, and I visited Mt. Holly Cemetery.  I was surprised by the peace.  It was especially interesting when I recalled childhood fears that graveyard fences restrained ghosts, goblins, and other frightening spirits.  Thinking about the difference between what I felt and what I remembered, I began to wonder where one might find those spirits, if not in the cemetery.

During the following year, I began to explore new photographic techniques.  I concentrated on night photography because the manner in which focused light falls on an object can isolate particular characteristics and clarify its identity.

We later returned to Mt. Holly at dusk to take some “ghost” pictures, beginning a journey that refined my technical skills while defining my thoughts regarding the possibility of a spirit world.  I began to better understand my own beliefs regarding life and death, loss, and the multiple layers of reality.

The images in the book are largely of individual spirits in ordinary situations, appearing to wait for someone or something.  Perhaps those spirits are re-visiting specific times or places that were special to them in some way.  Are these shadows fact or memory?  If memory, then whose, theirs or ours?  If fact, are they everywhere, as seen in these images, or only in certain places or at special times? Some of the images are special in ways that bring contentment and comfort.  They speak to a part of us that will never die, kept alive in the memories of our family and our friends.

It is my hope that these images will bring you pleasure and, perhaps, begin your own journey of discovery.
